How to Clean the Springfield Armory SA-35
A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean the Springfield Armory SA-35
The Springfield Armory SA-35, a modern take on the classic Browning Hi-Power design, offers legendary performance and reliability. Keeping it clean and well-maintained is essential to ensuring its longevity and smooth operation. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you clean your SA-35 properly.
What You’ll Need (click Gun Cleaning Gear in navigation menu):
Cleaning solvent or CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant)
Gun oil or lubricant
Cleaning patches
Bore brush and cleaning rod
Nylon brush or soft-bristle toothbrush
Microfiber cloth
Q-tips or cotton swabs
1. Unload and Perform a Safety Check
Before beginning, ensure your Springfield SA-35 is unloaded. Remove the magazine and visually and physically inspect the chamber to ensure there are no rounds present. Always handle your firearm with safety in mind.
2. Field Strip the SA-35
Disassembling the SA-35 is similar to the Browning Hi-Power:
Lock the slide back using the slide stop.
Push out the slide stop lever (also the takedown pin) from the right side of the frame.
Gently release the slide forward and remove it from the frame.
Remove the recoil spring and guide rod assembly from the slide.
Remove the barrel by sliding it out of the slide.
Now that the firearm is field-stripped, you’re ready to clean each part.
3. Clean the Barrel
Attach a bore brush to your cleaning rod, dip it in solvent or CLP, and run it through the barrel several times to loosen and remove carbon buildup.
Follow up with cleaning patches to remove any remaining fouling. Repeat until the patches come out clean.
Use a Q-tip to clean the feed ramp and chamber area thoroughly.
4. Clean the Slide
Apply solvent or CLP to the interior of the slide, focusing on areas with carbon buildup such as the breech face, extractor, and around the firing pin.
Use a nylon brush or soft-bristle toothbrush to scrub away dirt and fouling.
Wipe down the slide with a clean patch or microfiber cloth, making sure to remove all debris and solvent.
5. Clean the Frame
Use a brush and solvent to clean the frame rails and trigger assembly. Pay special attention to the slide rails, where carbon and grime tend to accumulate.
Wipe down the frame with a cloth, and use Q-tips to reach any tight areas inside the frame.
Clean the magazine well if any debris has accumulated there.
6. Clean the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod
Wipe down the recoil spring and guide rod with a solvent-soaked patch or cloth.
Make sure to remove any dirt or carbon buildup and ensure both parts are clean and free of debris.
7. Lubricate the SA-35
Proper lubrication is key to ensuring the smooth function of your SA-35. Use gun oil sparingly on the following areas:
Apply a light coat of oil to the outside of the barrel, especially around the locking lugs and any metal-to-metal contact points.
Apply a small amount of oil to the slide rails and frame rails for smooth operation during cycling.
Lubricate the recoil spring assembly with a light coat of oil.
Tip: Over-lubrication can attract dirt and debris, so use only a small amount of oil.
8. Reassemble the SA-35
Insert the barrel back into the slide.
Reinstall the recoil spring and guide rod assembly into the slide.
Align the slide with the frame rails and push it back onto the frame.
Insert the slide stop lever through the frame and barrel link, then lock the slide back into position.
9. Function Check
After reassembly, perform a quick function check:
Rack the slide a few times to ensure smooth movement.
Dry fire the SA-35 to check for proper trigger reset and function (ensure the firearm is unloaded before dry firing).
10. Final Wipe Down
Give the firearm a final wipe-down with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining oil, fingerprints, or debris. Make sure the exterior is clean and dry to prevent corrosion. Store the SA-35 in a safe, dry place.
By following this guide, you’ll keep your Springfield Armory SA-35 running smoothly and performing at its best. Regular cleaning after range sessions or extended use ensures your firearm remains reliable, accurate, and ready for action when you need it most.
